Each chapter is a pillar. Each name within it is a stone. Together they form a cathedral built not of marble but of memory - the accumulated record of a people whose contributions to American civilization have been minimized, erased, and repeatedly recovered by those who refused to let the story die. The book moves through the Tuskegee Airmen, Black writers, scientists and inventors, librarians and keepers of knowledge, artists and builders, athletes, musicians, educators, visionaries, philanthropists, and the centuries-long struggle for American democracy - tracing, in each domain, the unbroken thread that connects the griots of West Africa to the voices speaking today.
